Gallery: Orcas Island, May 2009

Orcas Island is the largest of the San Juan Islands in north-west Washington State. The island is accessed by ferry from Anacortes, WA or Sidney, British Columbia. These photographs are from our trip to Orcas Island in May 2009.

On the trip we took a whalewatching tour to see the Resident Orcas or Killer Whales which are found in the area. Resident killer whales live in large extended families called Pods. We spotted members of J Pod, including J1, a 55 year old male, with a distinctive ruffled fin. Other wildlife we spotted on our trip included American Bald Eagles, hummingbirds and a Steller's Jay.
